The SMART READER is a data transfer device

that was developed especially for reading energy

and water meters but that is already used in many

other areas (weather stations, machine monitoring,

wear analysis, etc.). 


As the system does not depend on a particular

location or power, and thanks to its modular

construction, it can be adjusted to be optimised

for the different requirements.













Brief introduction to the web portal


The web portal is the heart of and gateway to your energy management system. Object data can be captured
and monitored easily and quickly. All meter readings are saved here and all notifications and analyses are controlled 
here. The web portal comprises the following modules:


Energy management area


Buildings, systems and streets are created and managed here. The consumptions of meters that were read can be analysed one-to-one or compared in groups. You can export consumptions or meter readings to process them in other programs or you can carry out your energy management in the portal itself.




Analyses area


The analyses in the web portal are not just a

clear, graphical representation of consumptions,

but also a simple and intuitive way to create

period or object-related comparisons. Tools

such as the eco band that is indicated in colour

help with this. Here, you can immediately see

whether your object shows the correct theoretical

consumption. Consumptions can be indicated in

kW or kWh. Heating degree day cleanup can be

switched on and off with a single click.





Alarm and notification system area


You have the option to define alert thresholds and other notification criteria  for  each  meter. For example, you can have an SMS or an e-mail sent automatically for the following events:


  • Central heating failure
  • Water pipe break or a creeping leak
  • Lighting illuminated during the day or faulty bulb
  • Decrease in production of the solar power system

The water consumption was read every 10 minutes here. The system detected a continual water consumption of 0.9 l per minute due to a faulty toilet flush and sent the customer an alert SMS. Therefore annual costs of € 1,900 were able to be avoided, which would not have been noticed without the system! (Calculation: 0.9 l per minute = approx. 1.3 m3 per day = 475 m3 per year x € 4,- (water & sewerage fees) per m3 = € 1,900)



The water consumption in a detached house was read every 10 minutes. The system detected a broken water pipe and alerted the customer who was on a business trip. A specialist company replaced the leaking pipe on the same day and therefore prevented high subsequent costs due to damage.



In a building with oil central heating, a warning system was installed to prevent the tank running empty. The red circle shows when the system informed the customer and when they had the tank filled immediately. This alerting function is a huge advantage to prevent subsequent costs if the central heating fails due to running empty or to carry out tactical purchases. In conjunction with a calculation system, oil can be ordered from the supplier automatically.









In this example, the external lighting of an outdoor system was analysed. The system determined that the lighting can be switched off 2 hours earlier due to the early sunrise and that lighting from every second light is completely sufficient in the evening hours. This resulted in an electricity cost saving of € 1,800 (7,200 kWh) per year.



Generating and using compressed air is the most expensive source of energy in every production process that it is designed for. Depending on the size of the distribution network, thousands of euros can be saved per year by eliminating leaks in cut-off valves, seals and couplings. In the example shown above, a continual loss of 48 kWh per day was detected. This caused costs of around € 4,400 per year.

Analysing and optimising load peaks

A cheaper electricity tariff can be found by analysing the load peaks of machines that require a great deal of energy, e.g. by moving the production periods.


Notification if the central heating system fails

In schools, the central heating failing in winter is often a reason for lessons not taking place. An automatic alert message to the caretaker can prevent this in most cases.


Capturing and automatic calculation

Regardless of whether it is used in shopping centres or houses, automatic calculation of running costs saves the operator a great deal of time and money. A monthly consumption calculation is possible.


Production monitoring for solar power systems

If production decreases due to module contamination, failure of power inverters or faults, an alert message is sent by SMS or by e-mail. Additional advantages: Production forecasts.







An image sensor recognises the figures on the meter to be captured, compresses and encrypts the image data and sends this to the company server via standard interfaces (LAN / WLAN / UMTS). The image data is converted into a digital format here and can be called up via the portal at any time regardless of the location.
